Our History
Where we started
The Meredith Community Centre, Inc. (formerly Meredith Community House) was formed originally as a Collective in 1987. The focus of the collective was to focus on and foster a spirit of unity in the community. The House formed to encourage the community to take an active role in organising and implementing a planned program of activities available to everyone. It also sought to create a neighbourhood network as a focal point for the interaction of groups. The house also supported individual’s personal growth and development.
The Meredith Primary School Committee offered the use of the old Principal’s residence to the Collective, and a group of local members formed a committee to set-up the Community House. Those Committee members set about to apply for Coordination funding. The Committee of Management was an elected group from the larger collective membership that consisted of an Executive group as well as general members.
Funding granted
Funding was granted from the Department of Human Services which was used to fund a part-time Coordinator position.
Incorporation
Meredith Community House became an Incorportated body
Renovations and Official opening
The Community Centre underwent a renovation program with painting and decorating and extensions carried out to the back of the facility. A reopening and dedication ceremony was held on May 1st, 1991 with the Honorable Frank Sheehan, MLA doing the honors of unveiling a plaque commemorating this event.
Adult and Community Education Funding (ACFE)
The House secured funding from ACFE which has provided us with the ability to offer a broader range of courses in the General Adult Education areas as well as pre-accredited training.
Continuous Development
During the ensuing years, we increased have the size of the facility adding a portable building and extended the Childcare area. We continued to keep equipment up to date in our Computer lab as well as training equipment which has been used for a number of our classes as well as meetings by other organisations.
New Kitchen
In 2012 we upgraded our old and outdated country style kitchen to provide us with modern and comfortable facilities including disability access.
A bright Future
In 2016 The Community Centre combined with the Meredith Kindergarten with the building of the Meredith Community Learning Hub.
The building formed an amalgamation of our old building with the new purpose planned and built extension. We are enjoying working with the Kindergarten, Meredith Primary School, the Golden Plains Shire and the community in this fantastic new facility which provides us with lots of opportunities to expand our programs and activities.
